Holly Thomas

Full-Stack Software Developer

About Me

I am experienced in media and design, particularly in the field of video production. I have recently transitioned into software development, having trained with the Code Institute on their full-stack developer course.

I have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and value a collaborative culture of transparency and feedback. I enjoy problem solving, working around both technical and creative challenges to find interesting new solutions.

Trivia

icon for beach

I love spending time outdoors, and trying new activities! Among other things i enjoy: roller-skating, running, yoga, hiking, swimming, stand-up paddle board, kayaking and surfing (though it's tough to surf in Sweden!)

icon for book

I am constantly coming up with new ideas, and I love to loose myself in writing and creating. I have written and self published a childeren's book about time travel and guineapigs.

icon for airplane

I was in the Air Cadets as a teenager, which afforded me many oppertunities to do amazing things. During my time with the ATC I gained several marksmanship awards, was promoted to the role of Sergeant, and qualified for a pilots licence to fly a two man aircraft (sadly it's no longer officially valid).

Work History

Two common threads that have run throughout my career are creativity and technology, they are qualities that I both look for and aim to bring to any role. For me programming was a logical next-step from AV, incorporating my enthusiasm for technology and my passion for creativity.

Iron Oak Media Director / Producer

Running my own company has given me the skills and experience necessary to drive and lead projects, as well as to manage client relationships and expectations.

The role: Consultations & workshop facilitation, developing social media marketing campaigns. Producing videos and audio recordings, developing client brands.

Spotify

Working within IT allowed me to develop a number of skills outside my core role as an AV Engineer, consistently taking on new and exciting challenges.

The role: Administrator for Atlassian suite & Google’s admin console. Spearheading the adoption of Google hangouts technology, (including into a live stage environment). Presenting our integration solutions to Google and speaking at conferences.

Commissioning a development team to build an internal video portal. Working with developers to design the site and ensure security compliance.

Designing technical schematics for AV systems in offices and stages. Coordinating with stakeholders and managing expectations, sourcing and negotiate with installation companies, managing and overseeing installations.

Running IPTV broadcasting events, recording podcasts in the sound recording studio, filming video content.

University of Portsmouth
AV Loan Store Technician

My role was varied, and provided a lot of opportunities for learning and exploration within my field.

The role: Providing front line technical support for camera systems, managed the front desk of the University loan store, administration of equipment database and booking system. Supervision, maintenance and distribution of equipment. Producing recordings from talks and events, training other members of staff.

The role: understanding and troubleshooting financial systems and their integration, technical problem solving, documenting systems and common issues for training and speed.

An Unusual Career

icon for life ring

While in college I qualified as a Lifeguard, working in several different pools around my home county. I was a qualified first aider, though thankfully never had any serious incidents!

icon for clown

After studying Drama in college I worked with some friends as a clown. We would walk around festivals in costume and perform for the crowds. Sadly I can’t juggle any more, though I do still have my stilts!

icon for security guard

I spent many years working as a bounder / security guard across the UK. I have worked at Twickenham Rugby Stadium, various pubs and clubs across the south of england, and at a variety of festivals. I have even busted a drug dealer!

Core Skills

The Code Institute course that I am studying on covers a range of front-end and full-stack skills and tools. So far I have been studying HTML & CSS, including the Bootstrap framework. JabaScript and jQuery, and Python.

As well as the Code Institute, I have also been studying with a non-profit organization called Pink Programming. I have recently attended a camp where we were introduced to Visual Studio, and programming in C# for Windows Apps.
